For much of its service, Battery I was equipped with six 3" Ordnance Rifles, but the record is a bit unclear: after a battle in which two of the Battery's guns where captured, one narrative says it "was equipped with 3" Rifles." Did it have this model before and just got replacements for the lost guns, or did they receive these as new weapons replacing a different model?

In another case, one record states the Battery arrived at Gettysburg with six 3" Ordnance Rifles, yet the bronze bas relief  on the Battery's monument on East Cemetery Hill on the Gettysburg battlefield shown here depicts men operating a Model 1844 12-Pound Howitzer.

Four artillery officers pose with a 3" Ordnance Rifle at Fair Oaks, VA, June 1862.

While these questions remain about the Battery's armament while with the Army of the Potomac in the East, there is no doubt that it was equipped with the 3" Rifle when it was transferred west, where it served in the Chattanooga Campaign, and Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas from 1864 - 1865. For this reason, our reenactment Battery I chose a replica 3" Rifle as our field piece.
