HISTORY OF BATTERY I, "WIEDERICH'S BATTERY"
Battery I was organized in October 1861 in upstate New York and served through the Civil War, disbanding in June 1865. It fought in 33
engagements, and lost 34 men, almost equally between battlefield wounds and disease.
The Battery was organized by Michael Wiedrich, an Alsatian-born German immigrant journalist and politician then living in Buffalo, NY. He would be promoted out of the billet of battery commander in 1863, taking command of a regiment, but the Battery was forever known as Wiedrich's Battery in his honor.
